We waited to see if he would get adopted and he did not. Due to the current overcrowding, the shelter set his final day. We were keeping an eye on him because he appeared to be a very sweet dog and found out he was on the euthanasia list, so we pulled him out of the shelter 3 weeks ago. It would have been a tragedy to see a dog like this put to sleep. My mom babysat him for a week and kept telling me how perfect he was -- especially compared to my own dogs! She is 75 and a very tough sell on foster dogs. Needless to say, this dog would be perfect for a more senior owner.
We named him Fin (short for Finnigan - he has a reddish, bengal coat). He is a super happy, sweet, friendly, low energy love bug. We have fostered well over 400 dogs and have a lot of experience in dog assessments, training and adoption placement.
Here is what we know:
- Loves all people - loves men as much as women, loves kids. He is very soft, submissive and gentle. Takes treats very gently. We have taken him to several softball games where he interacts with people/kids. He goes to the park when we are doing dog training - he is around 50+ dogs at the park with no issues.
- Cats, dogs, donkeys... very social with everyone. He is great with small dogs as well. My mom's dog is 11 pounds and they get along great.
- Dogs - he is fostering with two dominant, young dogs who play really rough (100-pound Shepard and 55-pound Malinois). Fin is a more of gentle player, but is interacting great with our dogs even when they are crazy. He enjoys hanging out and buddying up, but he could also be fine as an only dog. My dogs love to snuggle with him in the dog bed or lay by him outside - they chew bones together with no issues at all. They also eat together (bowls 5 feet from each other) and he is not protective over his dog bowl.
- He has no food or bone aggression. He is fine being touched anywhere - I have had to remove cactus from his paw that he stepped in while on a walk, he let me do with no struggle or issues.
- Best car traveling dog EVER! he could ride around in a car all day, every day.
- He has no separation anxiety - could stay in a backyard or in a crate in the house. He is not a barker - rarely ever barks. He is not destructive - we have never seen him chew on anything but his bones. He has bedding in his crate that he never chews on (unlike our own 100-pound dog!!)
- He knows many commands - wait, leave it, no, sit... He is housebroken - no accidents ever in the home. Best bath dog ever! Just sits for his bath with no issues or fretting. He is not an escape artist.
- He is low energy. He likes his off-leash walks in the hills - but is more than happy to lay in a dog bed all day too. Great for someone who works from home or is older and does not get around much.
- He is a good eater, very healthy - neutered, vaccinated, microchipped.
- If you were going out in public a lot, he could use some training on leash - pulls a bit when excited (like with 50+ dogs) or at a softball game, but he does not pull on leash when on a walk in an area with little distractions.
We are fostering this dog - he is not part of a rescue and, as such, there is no adoption fee.
